Spring has officially begun! And with a new change of season, that just means there’s a new set of upcoming movies for me to review. If you’re unaware of what goodies lie ahead in the near future, I’ve got good news for you – there’s quite a couple of exciting films to look forward to. With several big blockbusters set to release within the next two months, you can rest assured knowing there’s going to be something big in theatres for you to enjoy. But hey, if you’re not into the mainstream, blockbuster type of film, there’s some great indie movies releasing too. I will admit though, for the months of April and May, I’m mostly excited about some of these bigger films coming out. Quick disclaimer though – sorry fans of the Fast and Furious franchise but you won’t be seeing Fast X (2023) on this list (I’m a fan of 1-7 but it’s just gotten too ridiculous in my opinion). But without further ado, let’s just dive straight into it. Here are several movies coming out in April and May that I’m keeping my eye on:

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Release date: April 5, 2023

Look, let’s not avoid the fact that there’s been a lot of hate over Chris Pratt’s awfully “un-Italian” voice. While I do agree that the film could’ve benefitted from a more “authentic” Mario voice actor, realistically, Pratt’s voice isn’t going to destroy my opinion of the film. Besides, isn’t that just how Hollywood’s always been? Movies are always looking for big names to throw into films to draw as much attention as they can.

But let’s talk about the film itself now because I really am excited for it! Do I have high hopes that this movie will be unlike anything I’ve ever seen? Not at all. I do think that it’s going to be a fun and enjoyable experience though, and I can’t wait to feel all that nostalgia rushing back. These are all characters that I grew up loving so I have no doubt that I will have a great time no matter how good or bad the film turns out to be. Plus the animation looks adorable! I’ve already got my eye set on buying tickets (definitely not an opening week kind of film though) so you’ll be seeing a review from me soon.

Air

Release date: April 5, 2023

Reuniting Matt Damon and Ben Affleck once again, I’m so so excited to check out Air which is based on a true story of how one Nike salesman managed to successfully sign on the iconic Michael Jordan. I love a good movie that’s based on a true story, and given what I’ve seen out of the few trailers that have been released, the movie is looking fantastic. I mean, how could you go wrong with a cast consisting of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Viola Davis? Another fun fact, this movie is currently sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! (Out of 15 critics only of course – but hey, that’s promising!) While I’m still debating if I’m going to head to theatres to check this one out, I wanted to highlight this film for you all since it is sort of muddled between a bunch of big blockbuster movies which are surely going to overshadow it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Release date: May 5, 2023

Calling all Marvel fans! The final movie of the GOTG trilogy is almost here. Sure to be an emotional one, I’m excited to see what James Gunn has prepared for us fans. While I have no doubts that the film will capture the same funny and upbeat energy as the previous entries, I’m definitely prepared to cry while watching this one. And I know for a lot of people that were disappointed by Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), fans are hoping this next Marvel film will yield a much more positive reception. What am I hoping for out of this third and final Guardians film? I’m definitely hoping for a killer soundtrack, but I mainly hoping that Gunn will manage to beautifully close out the story by giving the characters a worthy goodbye.

The Little Mermaid

Release date: May 26, 2023

In all honesty, I wouldn’t necessarily say this is a movie I’m “excited” to see. In fact, I doubt I will be heading to theatres to watch this one (I’d rather wait for The Little Mermaid to be released on Disney+). Disney has had a streak of terrible live action adaptions, and I personally don’t think this remake will be any different. From the trailer alone, I’m skeptical of the animated animals, the acting, and the storyline. But as a fan of Disney, I will eventually be checking this one out, it’s just a matter of when. If there’s one thing I’m holding out hope for though, it’s definitely the music and the soundtrack. Halle Bailey has a beautiful voice and I know she’s going to kill all the beloved songs, the problem is just that the music is definitely not going to be enough to carry the film as a whole. Still, if you’re excited for The Little Mermaid, let me know!
