While most Americans and fans of the sport tuned into the Super Bowl yesterday to enjoy two football teams competing for the trophy, I have to say, I was just looking forward to the movie trailers. With millions of eyes watching this incredibly popular event, many have now realized that there’s no better time to advertise your product than during the Super Bowl – and that goes for movies too! And with a whole lot of big blockbusters and highly anticipated movies releasing in the near future, we were treated to some especially exciting trailers and clips. So let’s just get right into it, here are the Super Bowl movie trailers that really caught my eye.
The Flash
Release date: July 16, 2023
Look, as bad as Ezra Miller has been and as much as I am disappointed by his recent actions, The Flash movie looks pretty incredible. More Ben Affleck as Batman but also Michael Keaton returning as Batman? Wow, who would’ve thought. The story looks pretty action-packed and as a fan of the original “Flashpoint” comic, it looks like they’re on the right track to doing the comic justice. While of course a movie can never be simply judged just from its trailer, let’s just say they’ve got me paying attention now.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Release date: May 5, 2023
As the final chapter to this beloved trilogy, this new Super Bowl trailer for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 really brings home the excitement and emotional factor for the fans. Knowing this film will be a goodbye of sorts, I think the trailer perfectly captured that kind of melancholy tone while still staying true to the wacky and hilarious group that is the Guardians of the Galaxy. This trailer did exactly what it was supposed to do (which is to get me excited for the film), and I can’t wait to head to theatres to watch it when it releases later this year in May (which is so soon!).
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Release date: June 30, 2023
Who doesn’t love Harrison Ford and the Indiana Jones franchise? Though very little has been disclosed about this movie and what the story will entail, it’s probably Ford’s last opportunity to play this iconic character so I’m all ears. Of the little glimpse we get in this clip showing the de-aging CGI done on Ford, I’ll say it looks pretty good so far. I’ll be curious to see how it holds up on the big screen, but for now, I’ll just say I’m pretty excited for the film.
Air
Release date: April 5, 2023
Honestly, I’m just so excited to see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck working together again! I believe the first trailer for Air was just released three days prior, but from what I’m seeing, I have some high hopes for the film. The premise seems interesting, and since it’s about such a beloved basketball player and shoe, I think there’s a good chance people will be interested. I love a good biographical film, and when done right, they usually become one of my favourite films. So here’s to hoping that the Damon and Affleck combo can pull off another great film!
You may have noticed that Fast X (2023) is not on this list…and well, that’s because I watched it and thought it was utterly ridiculous. I’m a big fan of the first seven Fast and Furious films, but they’ve continued on for too long and have now reached the point of utter nonsense. It’s not even about cars and racing anymore, it’s all about explosions and CGI! But yeah, just wanted to point that out in case you’re wondering why it didn’t make it onto my list. In all honesty, the movie just looks terrible to me. But hey, if you’re excited for it I’d still love to hear your thoughts on why! I’ve included the trailer for the movie below too if you haven’t seen it yet. 🙂
Cathy, I am honestly looking forward to all of these. including Fast X. I do understand your thoughts on it and the franchise in general. For me, I just suspend the logical part of my mind for a couple of hours and just enjoy the ride. It will be interesting to see what becomes of Air. I’m curious as to how it will do from a box office standpoint…wondering if people will actually go out to see this or wait for streaming. The Flash trailer certainly got a lot of folks’ attention, and I am very hopeful it will be a great experience and also a great step forward for DC.

I definitely try to shut off my brain for the recent Fast and Furious films but it has somehow gotten a little too crazy for me to enjoy anymore – I’m glad you still can enjoy them though! (Maybe my expectations for Fast X are wrong, you never really know with trailers 😀)
It’d be great if Air could do well in the box office! I’m sensing people might wait for streaming but you never know. But for films like The Flash, oh boy, it’s going to be popular (there’s been a lot of positivity towards the trailer). Any thoughts on the new DC line up by the way?

I think the new DCU is in good hands with James Gunn and Peter Safran. Like Marvel, they are projecting out years from now and letting us know what they have planned for both theatrical and streaming formats. I get the impression they are going to stay heavily aligned to the comics when possible, while also leaving the prior DC films “outcomes” in the past. The line-up looks pretty promising to me but again we’ll have (like Marvel) streaming and theatrical going on at the same time, and I’m sure (also like Marvel) there will be an inevitable disconnect between what is going on in the theatres and happening on our devices. “Creature Commandos” caught my attention as it sounds similar to “Werewolf By Night” from the horror angle. which I hope Marvel expands upon further. What are your thoughts on the DCU as it was presented?

I’ll admit that there were a lot of titles I wasn’t familiar with, but it definitely creates some excitement because we’re getting to explore new territory in the DCU! I’ve heard fans are especially excited for “The Swamp Thing” so I’m going to keep an eye on that (apparently it is one of the most iconic comic book runs in DC). I think I’m just trying to approach the new line up with an open mind and I’m going to place my trust in James Gunn and Peter Safran because hopefully they can (finally!) create a cohesive universe where it feels like each story has a purpose. Only time will tell! 😀

Some great trailers were show at the Super Bowl. I’m really excited for the Flash, mostly because Keaton is back as Batman, and Indiana Jones 5 as well. Guardians of the Galaxy VOL3 looks fun too, those movies always have such great soundtracks!

The Flash has definitely garnered a lot of positive feedback from the trailer – it looks great and Keaton looks great too! And you’re definitely right about the GOTG soundtracks (I have the first soundtrack on vinyl 😊)

It sure has. Everywhere seems to be buzzing about The Flash movie now. This trailer was great. Was thrilled to see Keaton back as Batman as well. The Flash movie is sure to be a big event that will reboot the DCU!

Looking forward to everything! Although Air will probably be seen somewhere down the line for me. The Flash is now at the top of the list for me, but Vol. 3 is a close second. Indy 5 is more like a cautious optimism. I agree that Fast X is ridiculous looking, but I do appreciate that they seem to get back to the street racing and butt shaking that the series began with. Overall, I wasn’t disappointed.

It’s awesome that we’re getting so many good trailers to be excited about! I do agree that I feel a certain caution about Indy 5 – did we REALLY need another one? But for the nostalgia, I’m still excited about it 🙂
I would absolutely love if Fast X went back to its roots, but it seems highly unlikely. Though I’ll probably check it out eventually for the sake of watching the entire series, I don’t think I’ll be heading to theatres for that one personally. Would love to see your review on it when it comes out though 😀
